Stray Dogs Interrupt Cross Country Race At Sochi Olympics (VIDEO)

In the months leading up to the 2014 winter Olympics in Sochi Russia, people wondered aloud whether Russia was prepared to host the biggest event in the world. As it turns out, the concerns have proven to be perfectly legitimate. Now that the Olympic games are nearly underway, there has been a variety of strange occurrences that have people worrying.

I present Exhibit A…

There is an abundance of stray dogs in Sochi, and this is becoming a problem. During a cross country practice session, some skiiers were harassed by random stray dogs. So what are Olympic organizers doing to solve the problem? It’s pretty horrifying.

Details from Total Pro Sports

Earlier this week, a pest control company came forward and claimed it has been killing stray dogs in Sochi for years, and that they now have a new contract from the government to ramp up their dog-slaying efforts during the Games. Of course Alexei Sorokin, the company’s director, likes to refer to it as “catching and disposing,” rather than slaying, but he’s not shy about what’s going on. He says the culling services are vital because thousands of stray dogs are roaming the streets, and some of them are even biting children.

I can’t imagine the Vancouver 2010 Olympic committee handling a stray dog problem the same way.

So what’s it like living at Olympic village in Sochi Russia? The CBC’s Jian Ghomeshi provides some insight…
