LA Angels Sign Josh Hamilton 5 Yrs/$125M; Torii Hunter Not Impressed
After the MLB Winter Meetings finished up word was a Josh Hamilton signing was soon to follow. Today, the LA Angels repeated their Albert Pujols saga from the 2011 Winter Meetings by signing Josh Hamilton to the tune of 5 years and $125M. As interesting as this signing is, purely for the name and money involved, there is more intrigue than meets the eye. When the off season began word was Josh Hamilton’s camp would give the Texas Rangers a chance to match a contract offer and things seemed as though the Rangers were always the leaders of the pack when teams were concerned with signing the sometimes troubled superstar.
When the signing was announced it was also noted that the Texas Rangers weren’t even given a phone call from the Hamilton camp. Not only did they not get a chance to match the offer but Hamilton ends up with their biggest division rival – no offense to the Oakland Athletics. Furthermore, the brand spanking new Detroit Tiger, Torri Hunter, had some choice words for Angels owner Arte Moreno. On twitter, Hunter (@toriihunter48) noted his displeasure with the alleged lying of Moreno with regards to available money this off season. Hunter claims Moreno told him the Angels didn’t have the money to re-sign him nor sign any other superstar.
