Brian Burke Explains Why He Was Fired By The Maple Leafs
After three days of questions, rumours, and inuendo, Brian Burke finally stepped in front of the media and explained why he was fired as President and General Manager of the Toronto Maple Leafs.
What’s the simple answer? The Leafs just didn’t win enough in his tenure as General Manager.
“I did not accomplish what I set out to accomplish here. That’s absolutely clear,” Burke said during Saturday’s press conference at the Air Canada Centre. “We didn’t win enough. That’s why we’re here today.
And how did Burke feel when he received the news that he was fired?
“There are some times when you get fired and you see the vultures circling and you understand it’s coming. You’re not sure when you’re going to drop dead in the desert, but it’s coming,” Burke said. This one was like getting a two-by-four upside your head. I would have liked to have finished the job. I was stunned by the turn of events.”
There have also been rumours that Bell and Rogers, the new majority owners of Maple Leaf Sprots and Entertainment, flat out don’t like Brian Burke. However, Burke thinks people are trying to confuse a simple problem.
“I’m not looking for a sniper behind the bush. Ownership had the right to make the change and they made that change. It’s my duty to accept that graciously and move on.”
Here’s some video highlights of Brian Burke’s press conference. It’s going to be very interesting to see if this firing has any impact on the Maple Leafs season. Toronto is arguably the toughest hockey market in the world, and the team is already making news for all the wrong reasons…
