Bob Costas Talks Gun Control On “Sunday Night Football” (VIDEO)
Bob Costas spoke about gun control on “Sunday Night Football,” just a day after Chiefs linebacker Jovan Belcher killed his girlfriend and then committed suicide.
Costas used his platform to talk about the need for gun control in the United States, and when you consider he’s talking to a nation that loves guns, it was a risky proposition.
“Hand guns to no enhance our safety, they exacerbate our flaws, tempt us to escalate our arguments, and bait us into embracing confrontation rather than avoiding it,” Costas said.
It’s important to note that Costas was quoting a Jason Whitlock column, but the comments sparked huge debate throughout social mediums.
Some people think that Costas’ comments were ill-timed and didn’t belong on a football broadcast. After all, many people watch sports as an escape mechanism to get away from the troubles of the world. Conversely, there are others who believe that people in a position of authority, like Costas, should be obligated to speak on these issues because they have the platform to do so.
No matter what your opinion is on the subject, I think we can all agree that this was a huge gamble for Costas. Many football fans are gun owners, and many Americans love to remind the world that it’s a constitutional right to bear arms. Costas probably alienated himself from a huge percentage of football fans by talking about this issue.
People that are proponents of lackadaisical gun laws seem to live by the maxim that, “guns don’t kill people, idiots with guns kill people.” Those who are in favor of gun control reform believe that purchasing guns and bullets shouldn’t be so easy. It’s an issue that has over 300 million people in the United States divided.
There have been a series of high profile gun related deaths in the United States in recent years, but funny enough, these incidents seem to widen the divide between the two sides of this argument.
